Media statement by Karpal Singh in Petaling Jaya on Thursday, 26th August 2010:

DAP CEC resolution

The DAP CEC resolved at its meeting on 26.8.2010 as follows:

1. Full endorsement of the Pakatan Rakyat Leadership Council meeting's decision on 26.8.2010 that UMNO and Utusan Malaysia are dangerously fanning racial sentiments to pit Muslims against non-Muslims to distract attention from the real issues of corruption and financial wrongdoings. UMNO and Utusan Malaysia has resorted to lies and falsehoods to threaten "a big war" bigger than May 13, 1969 racial riots as well as using race, religion and even the YDP Agong against PR. Urges BN to establish a Royal Commission of Inquiry into the RM52 billion shares scandal where RM52 billion bumi shares were hijacked by BN leaders and cronies.

2. Uphold the decision of the DAP Disciplinary Committee that Tee Boon Hock be expelled from the DAP for signing a business support letter in favour of his son's company to bid for a project with Majlis Perbandaran Klang.

3. Condemn the uncivilized attacks on the Malaysian Embassy in Jakarta, Indonesia, and called on the Indonesian Government to prevent its recurrence.

If Najib’s 1Malaysia is to have real meaning, Siti Inshah should not only be removed from the education service, there should be no place in civil service for other Siti Inshahs

In the Permatang Pauh parliamentary by-election in August 2008, the Bukit Bendera Umno chief Datuk Ahmad Ismail referred to the Malaysian Chinese as pendatang, orang tumpang and totally untrustworthy Malaysians.

In February this year, the special officer to the Prime Minister, Datuk Nasir Safar labeled Indians and Chinese in Malaysia as “pendatang”, and added insult to injury in declaring that “Indians came to Malaysia as beggars and Chinese especially women came to sell their bodies”.

Last Thursday, at the launch of the Merdeka celebrations of Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Tunku Abdul Rahman Putra, Kulai, the school principal Hajah Siti Inshah binti Mansor said: “Pelajar-pelajar Cina tidak diperlukan dan boleh balik ke China ataupun Sekolah Foon Yew.

A referendum will show that overwhelming majority will vote for a new IGP

When Tan Sri Musa Hassan’s extension of service for another year as Inspector-General of Police was announced on Sept. 3 last year, former Selangor Police Chief Datuk Yahaya Udin was quoted by the media as saying that the one-year extension should be sufficient for Musa to complete his “unfinished work”.

Now, it would appear that Musa has still got “unfinished work” and he is angling for another extension of service.

Let me reiterate what I had said last August, when opposing any extension of service for Musa as the No. 1 Policeman in the country.

I had said that I have no doubt that if the issue of whether the country needs a new IGP is put to a referendum in the country or the police force, the result will be an overwhelming “yes” for a new IGP.

Let me reiterate that I have no personal axe to grind against Musa and am purely taking a stand in the national interests, to roll back the tide of crime in the past six years as well as to inject the Malaysian police force with the adrenaline, dynamism and a reinvigorated sense of purpose that only a new police chief could evoke in another attempt to scale the goal to become an efficient, incorruptible, professional world-class police force respected internationally for its competence, ability and success to fulfil the three core police functions to keep crime low, eradicate corruption and protect human rights.

Ten Questions About ‘Teoh’s Note’

The Malaysian Insider

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 10 — Questions are now popping up over a “note” found last year in Teoh Beng Hock’s sling bag ‘that may throw some light regarding his death’ after the Attorney-General’s Chambers denied suppressing evidence in his death inquiry.

The AG’s Chambers issued a statement last night about the discovery of the note by Investigating Officer ASP Ahmad Nazri Zainal last October 7, more than two months after Teoh’s death.

Question 1 — Why did the investigating officer take two months to say he found the note in Teoh’s sling bag a day after the political secretary to Selangor executive councilor, Ean Yong Hian Wah, was found dead on July 16 last year.

Question 2 — Why do the police look like they are lackadaisical in investigating this death? Did they need a psychiatrist to tell them to look for a suicide note?

Question 3 — Why would the police even consider it a suicide case before finding the note? Were they looking for evidence to show its suicide?

Question 4 — Why did it take time after the note was translated to verify it? Wasn’t it a matter of utmost urgency?

Question 5 — Is it really a note in Teoh’s handwriting? What proof is there?

Question 6 — Why is the AG’s Chambers revealing it now and not immediately after it tested the note for authenticity or at the outset of the inquest? If the AG wasn’t satisfied then, why is he satisfied now to speak about the existence of the note?

DAP hari ini meminta kerajaan mengemukakan rang undang-undang untuk menetapkan tempoh masa minima persidangan Dewan Negeri supaya badan perundangan tersebut tidak dijadikan “rubber stamp” semata-mata demi memenuhi agenda peribadi sesuatu pihak sahaja.

(Ipoh -5-8-10)

Perak State Assembly destroyed by BN

Dato' R. Ganesan, the chairperson of the Perak State Assembly sitting on 3/8/2010 acted against the fundamental purpose of a legislative assembly and breached the legislative assembly convention when he ordered Dato' Seri Nizar Bin Jamaluddin out of the State Assembly. Dato' Seri Zambry, BN Perak Menteri Besar does not want the State Assembly to function properly.

The media were not aware of the events in the Perak State Assembly before Dato' Seri Nizar Bin Jamaluddin, as opposition leader stood up to speak during the 3/8/2010 sitting. This is because they were not allowed into the State Assembly (except the pro BN media) and were placed in a glass enclosed area where they cannot hear the proceedings unless BN appointed technicians turn on the microphone in the State Assembly.

Dato' R. Ganesan had ruled that Dato' Seri Nizar as opposition leader be given 15 minutes to speak and the other elected representatives be given only 10 minutes to speak. He also ruled that the sitting will only be for one day. This has sparked protest and objection from Dato' Seri Nizar and PR elected representatives as this ruling make a mockery of the legislative assembly. The microphones were switch off so that the media cannot hear the protests and the hansard will not record the request by the PR elected representatives to have at least 4 to 5 days' sitting.

The fundamental purpose of a legislative assembly is to allow elected representatives total freedom to speak before any enactment or bill is passed. The elected representatives are also expected to bring out all issues that affect their constituents. This is the place where elected representatives are expected to speak their minds. Laws have even been passed to protect elected representatives from being sued so that they are free to speak. Dato' Ganesan's rulings go against the fundamental purpose of the legislative assembly.

Malaysia’s Opposition on Trial

Anwar Ibrahim could be headed to prison again on trumped up charges. We urge the U.S. government to speak out on his behalf.

By AL GORE AND PAUL WOLFOWITZ
Wall Street Journal

We come from opposite sides of the political spectrum and disagree about a great many things. However, one issue that brings us together is the case of Anwar Ibrahim, the former deputy prime minister of Malaysia who is now leader of the political opposition in that country.

Mr. Anwar has been charged under very dubious circumstances with sodomy, a criminal offense under Malaysian law. If convicted, he faces a possible 20-year sentence—effectively life in prison for a man of 63. His trial, scheduled to resume next week, threatens not just Mr. Anwar but all those in Malaysia who have struggled for a freer and more democratic nation. It is also important for the rest of the world, because it casts a troubling shadow over the future of a nation that should be a model for other Muslim countries.?

Our views of Anwar Ibrahim have been formed completely independently of each other. We do not always agree with his views on foreign policy, but we do agree that

BN Working To Solve Issues Before Snap Polls

The Malaysian Insider

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 2 — Barisan Nasional (BN) is looking to solve three pressing issues — the Port Klang Free Zone (PKFZ) case, Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s second sodomy trial and Teoh Beng Hock’s mysterious death — before considering a call for snap elections.

The Malaysian Insider understands that BN leaders have privately agreed that these issues, together with the soft economy, need to be addressed before the ruling federal coalition is confident of dissolving Parliament for the country’s 13th general election, which is not due until March 2013.

“The three issues need to be solved. There is no two ways about it,” a BN leader told The Malaysian Insider over the weekend.

Talk is rife that Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak might call for snap polls to coincide with the Sarawak state election, which is due by July 2011, but the consensus is that the country’s largest state will proceed with its own election first. Pakatan Rakyat-ruled (PR) states have said they might not follow BN’s schedule as they want to fulfil promises made in Election 2008.
