Couple get 2 calls on 'son's kidnap'

NEW STRAITS TIME
MUAR: A couple received two telephone calls claiming that their son was kidnapped and that he would be hurt if demands were not met in time.

The first call was made at l0am on Tuesday, followed by another call yesterday around the same time.
Both calls were allegedly made by the same person believed to be a man.
Lim See Koon, 62, a school canteen operator, and wife, Tay Lee Hoon, 58, however contacted their 20-year-old son who worked as a mechanic in Malacca.
To their relief, he told them that he was all right and that he had not been kidnapped.

Suspecting something amiss, the couple lodged a report at the Muar police station at noon yesterday.
At a press conference organised by Bentayan State Assemblyman Gwee Tong Hiang yesterday, Tay said both the calls began with the wailing of a youth claiming to be her son and calling her to save his life.
Tay said she initially panicked and said she would meet all the demands from the kidnapper.
She, however, requested to meet her son before any ransom was made.
"I told the 'kidnapper' that if he did not agree, I would lodge a police report. The conversation then ended abruptly."
The same happened during the second telephone call.
"The youth claimed he was kidnapped and tortured. He said he would only be released if we met their conditions," she said, adding that she later decided to call her son just to confirm the incident.
Tay said the man who claimed to Boldbe the kidnapper spoke to her in Mandarin and had a strong foreign accent.
Gwee, who accompanied the couple to make the police report, said this was the first time such a case had been reported to him and he commended the couple for reporting the threat.
"I believe that there are groups on the prowl to cheat unsuspecting individuals. They could have obtained the telephone number from the telephone directory."
Muar police chief Assistant Commissioner Muhammad Nasir Ramli said investigations were under way and advised the public to lodge reports if they received such calls.
