Jetty may not be built due to constant erosion
MUAR: The Drainage and Irrigation Department (DID) may not build the jetty again in Kampung Pengkalan Kota, Bukit Serampang, after its second collapse on Friday.
Department chief Rehan Ahmad said the jetty was located along a part of the river exposed to heavy erosion, and a concrete jetty was not suitable.
He said it was the second jetty to collapse into Sungai Muar in two years.
We spent RM250,000 to build the jetties and strengthen the riverbank at the village in the past three years.
The first jetty collapsed in February 2007 and we built another to replace it in July,” he said on Monday.
Rehan said the second jetty that cost RM160,000, including upgrading work, collapsed on Friday.
He said the riverbank was prone to erosion and the department had explained this to villagers when they wanted a jetty two years ago.
Rehan said the matter would be referred to the state, and if a new jetty was to be built, the department would place it upstream to avoid erosion.
“We also want squatters on DID land along the river to relocate as the riverbank may collapse,” he added.
